Trevor Dean In The Singluar

Redemption.  Uncharted territory.  A completely different type of audience than any of the Saskatoon comics have been in front of before, and I was chosen!

That’s right folks.  Trevor Dean is getting back on stage this coming weekend, although I sure as hell didn’t see this one coming at all!

I naturally assumed the next posting I was to write would be the result of my meeting up with my comedy coach again, but he’s been very busy lately and we haven’t had the time to connect, although I’m sure that will happen shortly.  Instead, this posting will discuss my next “gig”, if you want to call it that.  Don’t get me wrong, getting stage time is important for me now that I am without a pot to piss in from a standpoint of noplace to perform for the time being.  However, getting back on stage this weekend presents a few challenges.

  1. Performing on little sleep
  2. completely different audience than any of the local comics have performed to before
  3. Practice, practice, practice!!!

There are only two people who know of this “gig”, and it will stay that way until it happens, because for the people who are attending it will be quite the surprise, plus there is more to my appearance than from a comedic standpoint only.  But I will break down the challenges I will face on Sunday.

  1. I run karaoke Saturday night and won’t be home until 2:00 a.m. on Sunday morning.  I will need to get to sleep and be up, ready to be on the road between 6:15 – 6:30 a.m. on Sunday.  Never mind the fact I’ll be driving on only 4 hours of sleep, but the location of this “gig” is a place I have never been to before.  It’s one of those places that’s out in the middle of nowhere type of deal, so I have to rely on my navigational skills to get me there on time!
  2. This audience will be different in many different respects than your usual comedy audience.  For startes, it won’t be in a comedy setting, of sorts.  Nonetheless, I should have a very captive audience because I’m sure none of them will expect to see an amateur comic at this event.  Up to this point my comedy coach and I have talked about a comedy audience and how they will react because they attend a comedy club/function knowing there will be a comic in advance, so they are prepared to laugh.  Very few people will know about it until it actually happens.  I’m thankful that through connections I was approached to do this.  I must keep this clean though.  Again, it shouldn’t be a problem considering the fact I am not ignorant, rude, vulgar or a bully on stage.
  3. Last, but certainly not least…..I gotta refine the material from the comeback.  Most of what I did on my comeback video was clean, but I have to tighten it up.  On the plus side however is the fact that my coach and I wrote additional material that wasn’t in the comeback for me to use.  I only have a couple days to practice and get things smoothly again, as I haven’t really looked at my material or wrote anything new since my last show.

The good thing is this time I won’t necessarily be on the clock.  My time frame is flexible, at best.  This should allow me to not only calm down, but to enjoy the moment and have fun with it.  Besides, I remember that I got into comedy not only becuase I felt my skill set was suited to it, but that I’d also have fun with it as well.

I’d tell you more, but that’s all you really need to know for now.  Besides, I don’t want the fact I’m doing a set to take away from the greater purpose that this weekend will hold.  So, stay tuned as early next week I’ll fill the rest of yous in on what went down   🙂
